Current Research Groups

This research group analyzes what constitutes public law from a critical and wide perspective. Thus, the group recognizes the impossibility of understanding contemporary public law from an orthodox and limited perspective, and instead undertakes its studies of public law bearing in mind the relationships of the subject with other areas of knowledge and society as a whole. Accordingly, the group studies public law from critical perspectives and interdisciplinary considerations, while also doing research projects from a purely legal perspective.

The public law group has taken on the mission to observe the phenomenon of public law based on the recognition that, in contemporary society, it cannot be understood from a limited and uncritical perspective, so often seen in legal orthodoxy. Instead, it has to be considered a relevant event that affects different sectors, spaces, spheres or society systems, and which demands that legal approximation be supported, criticized and reviewed by other fields of knowledge.

As well as supporting, proposing and developing law-centered research lines and projects, it requires that their conception and development includes spaces for the review and critique of their hypotheses and conclusions from other fields of study.

The group also develops and promotes studies based on methodologies and theoretical structures belonging to other disciplines that can be used in debates that are based on or are about the legal field.

The International Law and Globalization Research Group focuses its academic studies on the relationship between Latin America, Colombia, and international law. It does this from from an interdisciplinary perspective, taking into account considerations from different disciplines such as economics, environmental disciplines, history and anthropology. The group considers that the most appropriate way of thinking about international law in the region is looking for initiatives that use the international law as a privileged tool. The group proposes a critical reflection of the past and a careful look of the future, as it considers the opportunities offered by international law to deal with issues in Latin America.

This group studies the way in which the State –and thus, society- handle social strife using a repressive criminal policy and a punitive system of control and surveillance. This institutional setting tends to punish most severely the poorest and most marginalized inhabitants of society.

This group fosters studies and advocacy strategies regarding environmental law and public policy. Therefore, the group aims to provide a space for discussion and exchange of the production of knowledge regarding environmental law, taking into account both the formal institutions (such as laws, judgments or public policies) and the informal institutions (including tacit regulations and local rules). The tensions and encounters between the formal and the informal orders constitute the governance framework that explicitly or implicitly regulate the environment and the distribution of natural resources. Although this group concentrates its analytical capabilities on the observation and theorization of formal institutions – as they are the official legal forces in environmental regulation- it does not disregard the conflictive relation of articulation and contradiction between the formal and the informal institutions.
